segments without using an outline. The main reason I tried to avoid using outlines in this piece is because the shield Twilight holds up to represent the Kirins and Niriks has no outlines.

Alder's design was made in tandem with #MadoraPansy's design. I looked at a lot of mlp fim familys and tried to figure out a pattern. I also looked at a theory video about how the colors worked. It seemed like there were two main patterns; coat and mane colors didn't mix, but they could swap places, or they mixed a little so the offspring wouldn't be an exact copy of their parents. On the other hand, the video suggested that the colors worked a bit like the RBG color values. If both parents had a strong Blue value, for instance, the offspring could be blue even if neither parent was.
I liked this theory, so i learned wnat the values were for #zaffrezu and #maginazina, I got to working figuring out what values would maje theirs.
Then for hairstyle, the offspring have similar hair to their parents, so I isolated different aspects of their hair and gave it to eacn parent.

Alder's design turned out to be the light greens needed for Zaffre's mane and hooves, browns for Magina's mane,

and the light green for the stripes. Combined with the color values from his wife Madora, you get the necessary colors for Zaffre and Magina.

As far as why I made him a Kirin, well thags a bit of a story.

So I really liked adding extra random horns to Magina Zina, and my excuse was that she was half kirin. Then, when @Foxway made me Zaffre, he looked like he could also be a kirin and Magina's older brother. So I made them siblings.

This meant when making their parents, one of them had to be a kirin. At the time, Kirins werent cannon, so I made his design similar to his kids but based on kirins from myth.
I felt that I had too many female characters with magic, so I made Alder a kirin so he coukd have magic. Since Zaffre cant use magic, I thought one of the parents should be an earth pony. If I made the mother the kirin, then I would have 2 males without magic and 6 females with magic, and I wanted to break that up a bit.

So thats why he's a kirin. Then once kirins were cannon, I remade his design so it would be closer to the cannon. I tried to keep as many elements of his old design, but some elements were left off.

I may add the stripes back to his design one day, but for now,

the reason why his kuds have stripes and he doesnt his because his kids are hybrids and genetices are weird. The stripes on his kids are actually clusters of weird looking scales. And his horn has 2 other points besides the main point, which translated 2 seperate horns in his kids.

The as far as a backstory goes, he left his village since he wanted to help and talk to people. He came across Madora in the woods and she took him back to her village. They eventually fell in love and had 2 kids.

I love these character designa and backstories! This is a lovely family ^^
