Cherie began to read the tattered newspaper. Her glasses were in sorry shape and the damages on the page made it hard to read, but she managed to make out this:
"To alert the populace: as of recently, our allies have declared war against us. Though we've been friends for years, this bond we made has now been broken. It has come to the attention of all that our southern friends have turned and, we could never be anymore polarized. The argument on who gets control over the rich, fertile land in the north remains unsettled. The southern magic-bearing fiends want full control on how it is regulated, and they demand high taxes on those who run it. Humans have, for many years lived under their power. One could say safely, but has it been neither comfortable nor it has been easy. We are becoming more and more like animals to them, myself and others do not wish to become slaves. As it is, we've formed our own committee. We, the human race, refute any form of magic and seek our own independence in this land. Of course we have asked them to grant us the freedom we desire, but they did not take it kindly, and as of now it should be no surprised that human based towns will be under siege more often. I urge everyone dearly to stand and help drive out these mongrels."

A feeling of remorse fell over her, if only she had kept herself informed like the rest of the town. She'd might of been able to do something about the destruction of the town, and her café. No that was silly, news traveled slow anyway, especially since Cortland was more, remote.
"Ah my leg! The only good leg I had! Why'd ya shoot, Why'd ya shoot my good leg Jim. Don't ya know it's me?" Said a man, he squealed like a pig and howled like a dog. He would not shut up about his leg, and he somehow knew Jim. Cherie lifted her gaze from the paper and looked to where the noise was. Jim was already stalking towards him, there was a fire in his eyes, they definitely knew each other. He grabbed that man by the collar and slammed him against the crumbling wall of a burnt shack. "Now see here! Her-here me out! Remember me, Rainer? I was with you in the group of those other bounty hunters."
"I thought you got shot like the rest of them."
"Now, now I survived, I'm too clever to die so young." Rainer gave him a rather ugly smile, which only urged Jim to punch the snake between his eyes. "If I remember you ran off like a cowered, what was your plan there? Leave it to the rest of us? Kill us later than take credit yourself? You bloody bastard!" A deep growl rose from his throat.
"Yes, I mean-"
At that moment of Rainer's mistake Jim hurled him at the wall causing it to break down completely.

Rainer continue to howl in pain, he hit the ground behind him hard. He seized up and his tone changed to something a lot more piercing and sharp. "Yea, you figure me out, you going to give me a whopping now? Big boy? Hm? Hm?" Jim wasn't all that tall, infact Rainer was towerd over him by several inches. So the insult seemed a bit out of place. Jim came over and slugged him hard in the gut, he stepped back and pointed his gun towards Rainer's head. "Give me one good reason why I shouldn't end you right here."
"Well killing a comrade wouldn't be good for your record now would it?"
"Are you taking me for a fool?"
"No sir."
Just then Cherie came in and interjected with something rather unrelated. "You're hunting strange people to save our race? How admirable! In that case thank you for blasting through my café!" Excitement was written all over her tone, and the two men look at her rather confused.
"Looky, looky, Jim is this your girl? My where did you find such a dull thing."
"What the hell are you going on about!" Jim shouted, ignoring Rainer's previous remarks. "You're not helping us then?" Cherie's excitement faded, she looked away from them and adjusted her glass. "Well..." She started but she failed to make anymore words.

Rainer but on a devious smirk, he placed himself on two feet and walk towards the woman. "Well of course we are! Jim just cares so little about the motive behind the people who hired us that he's forgotten why he's evening killing them. He's the perfect tool!" Rainer chuckled and placed his hand on the woman's shoulder. "Ain't that right?"
"Shut your damn mouth, they just offered more." Jim muttered
"They were the only ones who offered anything, come on don't say that, yknow those supernatural scumbags wouldn't pay us a cent."
It was true what Rainer said, there was only one side for them to really take, only one side that offered them a chance at life.
