re: so popopo is basically the first ever puffball. when dreamland was barely inhabited, popopo suddenly fell from the stars and crash landed there. he is an extremely jolly and bubbly puffball, buuuut... he had quite a few mental disorders. i'll actually explain why in a bit.
these disorders generally caused him to be extremely strange-he spoke with strange wording and made many new words to substitute other words on a daily basis, and he essentially acted as if he didn't know what to do with his emotions. plus he had weird habits, such as doing weird things whilst talking to people, abruptly letting out strange loud noises mid conversation or even mid sentence, having outbursts of extreme giddyness to the point its eery, and well
he was very mentally unstable, he never wanted to hurt anyone though
in fact as dreamland developed, he created the star rod from his own energy and in turn the fountain of dreams
and afterwards he fought off whatever trouble arose

the dreamland denizens considered popopo their hero-however, they didn't ever truly become close friends with him due to his general strangeness, and popopo was admittedly very lonely. he tried to make friends only for some excuse to be made in which someone could avoid him.
this loneliness generally gathered into a form of negative energy inside of popopo, but it never effected him much outwardly, other than random instances where he bursts into tears.
eventually, popopo died. nobody knows for certain how, but it's most often presumed to be murder. the actual answer is halfly suicidal.
he essentially gave up on trying to keep himself alive, fighting through many battles over a long and painful course of time without ever healing himself, in a slow but sure suicide attempt.
and then when he did die, his corpse quickly mutated into a monster made of popopo's power and built up negativity;
void soul.
void soul then encased itself in energy and created void termina.

void termina then destroyed many planets neighboring to popstar, killing probably billions of creatures, until eventually four heroes rose up and fought void termina in a similar battlefield to where it's fought in star allies.
they defeated void termina, destroying it's body and almost it's soul, and the negative energy from popopo/void termina created dark matter. however, whatever positive energy that remained from popopo's truly caring side formed into more puffballs, beginning the puffball species as a whole. puffballs and dark matter were scattered in various places across the gamble galaxy (akawhereithinkthekirbyuniversetakesplacein), and then void soul's remaining energy was sealed away for many centuries. the heroes then disappeared as all was peaceful again.

so yeah popopo is void termina in my headcanons

ok so im gonna explain what i mentioned i'd explain now. which means i gotta explain my headcanons on puffball reproduction. :^)
ok so, since puffballs quote clearly do not have private parts, they have to reproduce in another way. this is what i call "The Wishing Star Theory" xp
basically, if two puffballs (regardless the gender), who are mature and of the age, truly love eachother and want a child, then they'll hold hands and essentially wish for one sometime at night. this wish will eventually come back to them in a few days time, in the form of a falling star. the star will land as close as possible to the parents, and then after the star spends a few days to a week bonding with the parents (aka the parents take care of it closely), it will form into a baby puffball with some physical traits of both parents and a random gender.

note: i say the wishing star theory is also how many other species from the kirby series reproduce, and no species doesn't matter. you could have, say, a cappy and a waddle dee have children in this way. the species of the child, in this case, would be dependent on the stronger wish. if the waddle dee's wish was stronger, the child's a waddle dee.
if both wishes are equally strong, the child is a hybrid. however, it will not be a freak of nature in any way.

now, with all this stuff in mind... what if one of the parents disappeared before the star arrived?
basically, if one or both parents of the star aren't around when the star arrives, and the star doesn't bond with them, the child itself will experience negative changes.
if one parent is missing, there will be moderate physical and mental disabilities/disorders.
if both are missing, these disabilities/disorders will be far worse, and the child has a high chance of being disfigured or deformed, or even changing [cont.]

into a dark matter-esque creature upon birth.

so.
popopo is a no parent star who went completely out of wack. it's also why his proportions are different from a normal puffball's (aka like kirby) proportions.

wow ok i am so sorry for these long comments, but hey, you got to hear blabbering about kirby lore from a kirby nerd who has too much time on her hands

re: yeah a star could be adopted, and it wouldn't have that many problems necessarily, so long as the new parents were caring and bonded with it early
however, if they bonded with it like a day before the child was born, then it'd be a weak bond and have problems that a one parent star has, and if no bond and the child is adopted after birth then the no parent problems arise instead

oh and
even if its adopted like a few minutes after its found or something
the child will have a weaker connection with its adoptive parents and will be able to tell to some extent they aren't it's actual parents
