Here's a sad story explaining why Touma blinded himself.
After Bagan's defeat, the Shobijin predicted that Juno's third son would have Bagan's eyes, which would turn anyone insane if they looked at them. In the year 2041, Touma's born. However, he did end up having eyes like Bagan's, except they can make a steady monster very clumsy, or a good hearing one to become deaf. (continued in comments.)

(continued.) Although the effects are temporary, Touma thought it's his fault that any of this is happening to everyone that he looked at. What sent him over the edge was when Juno had once looked at him in the eyes and he suffered horrible depression the next day. Taking matters into his own hands, Touma decided to claw his eyes out so they won't hurt anyone else. No one got any effect from his eyes after this, but he also became totally blind. He completely relies on sound at this point.
