They say mages descend from humans. Legend goes, when the fae and the humans first fought, the beasts created the relics to give to twelve worthy humans, so that they could mediate between the two nations. These First Ethriers shared with a handful of trusted others their magic, and became the start of a new people.

The mages evolved into an advanced race with heightened senses and magical aura. With the ability to see and feel mana, they could control it to preform magic at will. Their appearance would also be influenced by mana, depending on the element; wind magic caused pink hair and eyes, water magic caused blue, and so on.

However, with the convenience of magic, they didn't see much point in developing their civilization, and as such, tend to live in the same, medieval ages as they did a millenia ago.
