Part 3, Mountain
-
The very faint, cheerful sound echoed in the trees. I looked over to its source and could tell that the wolf heard it too.
"What's that noise? It doesn't sound like speaking." I strained to hear the odd sound. It was almost comforting.
"Pay it no mind," the wolf growled softly. "Just listen for crickets."
"Crickets? Why crickets?" The cheerful noise was already disappearing and I looked back forward in disappointment.
"I can tell you will not cease your questioning, so I will explain. A little. We are on the edge of a very dangerous forest. If the trees grow thicker and you hear crickets even in the middle of day, run. Only the outermost layers are safe enough." The last sentence almost seem to be swept away by the wind. All I could do was nod and keep going forward. The mountains stretched high above us and dread seeped through my veins. Safe enough? Why bring me here if we could be killed?
-
The sun was setting as we came to the small valley between the two mountains. High above our heads, a weak-looking bridge of rock connected them at their peaks. The valley felt empty, the great peak sheltering it from the cool winds. The mountain on the right was wide and tall, and while it had seemed to have a gentler slope on the other side, here it was simply a sheer cliff stretching all the way to the top. The one on the left was similar, this one instead seeming too steep to make any progress on foot at all.

When we finally reached the end of the valley, I could see a stony path zigzagging up the wide mountain. Dark holes dotted it, at least a dozen of small caves in the mountainside. Past the valley was a wide stretch of empty land, farther and below was a great central forest, and even farther the sea. A shadow on the horizon, almost being swallowed by the setting sun that made it hard to focus, showed that there may be something out in the ocean. The land to the right was forest, same to the land on the left, though there was a gigantic pile of rubble as well, like a mountain that had shattered into a thousand boulders. The thought of something powerful enough to break a mountain sent a shudder down my spine and I turned back to the wolf, who was motioning to the start of one of the paths up the wide peak. Ignoring the ache in my legs I followed, wondering where it would lead us. The sun had sunk into the sea and the clouds dotting the sky had been whisked away. Already, a few stars were faintly shining in the growing darkness. Hopefully the moon would be bright enough to light the way.
-
It felt like an eternity up the mountain until finally we came to a sheltered cave far away from the others, even from the path. A small lantern sat in the center, already sending flickering orange light dancing along the stone walls. The wolf stood on the other side of it, the light illuminating its face. As it sat down, once more there was a small force pushing me to do the same.
"Your name is Eilym, correct?" The wolf's white eyes, orange in the light, seemed to stare into my soul.
"I thought my name was-"
"Your name is Eilym, correct?" It repeated, clearly showing the only answer was yes. I nodded reluctantly. A small smile creeped onto its jaws.
"My name is Ada," the wolf stated. "And this is Zix." At the sound of the odd name, a tiny gray dragon appeared from behind Ada. It had no wings and a long body, small antler-like horns on its head. Its eyes glowed blue and orange, the same two colors forming intricate markings along its sleek fur.
"H... Hello," I replied awkwardly. Zix chuckled, making very minute noises that I could barely understand.
"I realize you are tired and confused," Ada began, walking towards the entrance to the cave, "But I assure you, you wouldn't have wanted to stay where you were." She looked up to the sky as I looked into the light of the lantern. I was tired, but felt no need to sleep.
The gray wolf howled to the stars, two more great creatures in the distance joining in her song. It was the same faint melody I had heard earlier in the morning.
I let the sound surround me, grateful for a break from the haunting silence of the empty road.
