Part 2, Field
-
Consciousness was not my friend. The world that faced me was near the same as the last one I had seen, graying grass stretching out endlessly with a similarly colored sky above my head. What would come next, a gray void? Before I could even give a second thought to my new reality a soft growl echoed to the right of me. The animal was there again, sitting, just staring at me with light eyes twinkling in... amusement? Its stoic expression eased until it seemed more at peace. I stared at it, looking at the darker and lighter markings on its otherwise plain coat until it blinked and stood. Then we both stared for what felt like eternity, my eyes unable to break away. Its head turned and so did mine as if the motions were connected and in the distance stood a fault in the line of the horizon. Hills rose up, the blurs of trees accompanying them. Two peaks stretched high above the land like dark scratches left in the sky. I don't remember starting to walk towards the unknown place. I just know that I was moving forward in complete silence.

Once more it seemed as if time never moved, yet slowly the hills and the trees were drawing near. The creature, who I figured now was what they had called a wolf, matched my pace, head down and eyes focused straight ahead as it walked alongside me. The only sounds were the wind and the movement of six feet.

The first small trees were finally next to us. I was about to reach out to them but my arms felt limp and my legs kept moving. The wolf was still staring straight ahead, long tail brushing against the grass. It was mid spring, small leaves clinging to the branches of the trees. The forest grew thicker for a moment, then gave way to a line of stones that seemed to stretch forever around the land we were about to enter. The wolf stopped and my own motion was halted. It glanced up at me and then placed a paw over the line of stones as I held my breath. The wind grew strong as it stepped another paw over the boundary, my right foot copying it. Cold wind howled around us as both of us came fully over the line. Our eyes locked and the markings on its pelt seemed to grow more intense as the wind nearly knocked me down, then yet again came to the same eerie halt. The wolf's pelt returned to normal and I broke my eyes away just as a clap of thunder shook the ground and rain pelted down onto the dry grass. I tried to say something, but my voice had gone.

I didn't know where we were going. After passing a creek, then a pond, I was finally able to speak. The cycle of day and night had returned, and dawn was breaking, spreading new light across the land as the rainclouds had gone. Shafts of light filtered through the woods. "Wh.. Where are we?" I finally managed to say, not realizing that I was talking to an animal. No one had really been able to understand me. They always said I had an odd tongue, but I didn't quite care.
"You can't know that yet," the wolf replied in a soft but stern voice. "We will be taking the path between the village and the forest. You mustn't know the names of them yet. There is something we must do first."
"Well, what is it?" I looked down at the wolf and for the first time realized it was up to my ribcage. It seemed to be walking closer to me than before.
"Cannot say. Cannot say who I am either." It glanced up at me with a slight smirk. "You are a curious one, aren't you? But curiosity once killed the fox. Keep your voice down if you must keep talking." It looked back to the ground as if it had said nothing.
I sighed and kept moving, not noticing the swish of the dark cloak hanging from my shoulders.
