Nice work for your first piece! As for shading I tend to vary. Most of the time I go for a more cartoon-like style, so I use the base colour, a darker tone, and a lighter tone to create shading effects. But you can use the softer brush and different transparencies to shade, that gives a more realistic look. Really, if you want to learn how to be better at this and learn new techniques, just watch other people's playbacks. Hope this helps :)
