@Ignite> My friend, it is clear to me that you have come through much. All of us have. I've been around the block and back, and let me tell you from my story of success, God is the only answer to this situation.
However, it appears that you've been misled as to who or what 'God' is. Evidently, if you use the word 'cruel' to describe a god, that is not the 'God' from the Bible. Let me clarify this.
Once upon a time, God created the universe. I'm sure we've all heard some version of the story or another, but the God who created all of this is properly called 'Jehovah', AKA God 'The Father', and when he did the creating, he was accompanied by Jesus (Christ), AKA God 'The Son', and also the Holy Ghost.
I understand that all of this is complicated; I have studied it a great deal to reach these conclusions, but I want to share this knowledge so that you, also, can come to find the truth and the meaning of things.
God created everything and saw that it was 'good'.

'Good' is not a variable factor. It is strict and unchangeable, and God has the knowledge to show people what is 'good' and what is 'evil', and he has the authority to reward people according to their choices and actions.
This often presents questions about why he doesn't go ahead and dish out some justice on the wicked people who cause others to suffer. But, if God went ahead and punished every evil person, we'd all be in hell already. Nobody lives without causing somebody else to suffer. And if there was any question about this, your parents (to whom it is relevant) could probably have told you stories about how much trouble you've caused them.
Point being, God is patient with people, even if they do bad things. People make mistakes. People don't know right from wrong some times. And some times, people don't WANT to know right from wrong.
The Bible says that God loved the world so much, that he actually sent this Jesus Christ into the world, to save people.

I did not understand what 'being saved' really meant until recently, myself, but I'll get back to that later.
God has only ever meant good for the people, and the only times he has ever harmed people were in righteous judgment for their wickedness. God wants us to live in paradise for ever, but - and get this - he is good enough to let us decide this for ourselves. When he first made the world, he made it a beautiful paradise, and gave Adam and Eve an option to destroy that paradise if they wanted to do evil. They walked the path of wickedness for curiosity's sake, and God punished them by allowing their bodies to deteriorate with age, and allowing thorns and such to grow alongside the food plants.
Now, working to provide for yourself - is that cruel, or is that fair?

God is not willing that any should perish, but that all people would come to find knowledge of the truth, the way of righteousness, and go in it, so that they can have for themselves the gift of eternal life in paradise, as the original world was meant to be.
However, in the new world (which we presently call 'Heaven'), there will not be an option to ruin it. This is because only the people who are truly righteous will be allowed to enter. There would be no need for an option to do evil - our choices here on this earth demonstrate our values, and the people who will make it into heaven are so upright of character as to choose the path of righteousness any time the option comes up any way.
God loves you enough that he preserved the story of the creation, paradise, Adam and Eve, good and evil; sent Jesus Christ to show people the way to Heaven, so that they could write it in the Bible; and allowed me to reach the end of my rope, so that I could come to understand this,

so that I could explain it to you, tonight, so that you can live in paradise with him (and me, hopefully!) after the end of the world.
Now if God is cruel, why would he love you that much?
If you'd like to talk about this, I'd like to discuss it with you. I'd like it if we could be roomies in Heaven, but I'm pretty sure we all get our own mansions, so I'd be happy with neighbors.
