You can use numbers on here, just no more than five at a time.
It's a dumb thing but it's not Collecting Smiles' doing, it's Nintendo's. The number limit is on the friendlist on the 3ds as well as on the Wii U and various other things and games like messages on Sm4sh. It was a thing on Miiverse too.
