Capable of breathing in water as well as on land, manipulating water currents for ease of movement, and spitting scalding water at enemies. The two variants are genetically similar enough to interbreed but do not have the same language or culture. Coastal akrills are venomous and open ocean akrills have toxic spines. Both are immune to their own species' toxins/venom. The whiskers are highly sensitive.
