I think you misread a bit. He used a PSI Stone, specifically an Hypnosis Theta one.
If this was canon in some way, it would be before Chapter 9, cause his powers radically expand to the point of protecting himself from other's PSI, unless he lets it.
Also, don't you find something strange in Greninja in this drawing?

Sadly, I don’t see anything strange about Greninja other than the PSI stone he have in his hand. Probably his eyes is light blue?
