The Brinks and Soul Power by Reindeer-King

The Brinks are the twin children of the White Stag and defend all light- and dark-aligned creatures, often gifting those who follow them loyally with magical powers.
The spirits' power comes from the souls dedicated to serving their spirit's cause, much like Dark Brink's proxies. The more souls, the stronger the power over their sibling is, the higher tiers of magical powers that can be gifted to loyal subjects.

The Brinks may also choose one Champion for their cause, a being that can command the other proxies in their control and give them the ultimate gift: immortality. However, this is not without a price. Each time the Champion suffers a fatal wound, they fall into unconsciousness and get transported to anywhere on the globe, where they will awaken with no memories and live out the next ten years of their life under the radar of the Brinks. If the Champion happens to have a child in this time, then the magical gifts that the Champion possesses may be passed to the child, though in a weaker form.
Dark Brink's Champion is Mortikai Ondor, who made his pact with the spirit in the 1800s after wishing for his abusive father's death and the animals used in their circus to be treated well. He has since died and lived again three times, and is currently on his fourth life.

(Cont.)
Light Brink's Champion is Dispair Darkyn, formerly Hope, although he doesn't know it yet. He made his unspoken pact with the spirit when he wished to undo all the bad he had done while under the care of Dark Brink. Technically, he is on his second life, as his first was taken while still a proxy of the Dark spirit.
Each Champion has some expertise at their magical gifts that those who are born with have, and that those who are given them for being loyal supporters do not have. For example, Dispair is able to appear as completely human, whereas one of his adopted children, Catacus, can appear as human but still retains one of his feline features - his ears.

The soul power that each spirit receives is used to power not only themselves, but also the life force of their Champions. If, hypothetically, Dark Brink was to be overpowered by forces of light and his proxies be freed from his power, Mortikai would no longer be immortal and would begin to age normally from his physical age, as well as dying fully when he recieves untreated fatal wounds.
This power also gives the spirits the ability to see into the future, which also depends on how much power they have. It was how Dark Brink knew how Snakepaw (Paranorm's old apprentice) would play a part in his possible downfall, and how Light Brink directed Dispair to each of the beings he has helped and saved.

Both spirits work to maintain their soul power, but Dark Brink only uses it to fuel himself until he becomes powerful enough to take over his own parent. He has a long way to go yet, but it can still happen, unless Light Brink can find the power to rival her sibling's.
