I saw a man a year ago
He rode the bus home on a rainy afternoon
While he wrote songs on the fog of his window
And each time he'd write those words
They'd eventually fade away
I saw him eat, work, and sleep
By the end of it, he was out of tune
All the while hearing the animals scratch at his door
And each time he'd hear them
He'd cover his head in pillows

I saw a man a week ago,
He rode the bus most of the day
While he wrote one word repeatedly on the fog of his window
And each time he'd write it
He'd stop to contemplate
I saw him work and sleep
By the end of it, he was worried
All the while the animals claw the door for food
And each time he'd hear them,
He'd stop to feed them with scraps

I saw a man yesterday
He wasn't on the bus
While not a single word was on the fog of his window
And each time I'd look
I could faintly see where he used to write
I saw him sleep
By the end of it, he'd only have slept an hour
All the while he left his door open for the animals to come in
And each time he'd hear them,
He'd give them his meal

I saw a man today
He wasn't in the house
While not a single word was on the paper of his journal
And each time I'd skim over it
I could see why
I finally saw him standing
By the end of it, he had nothing to lose
All the while the animals have long done their damage
And each time I'd hear them,
I'd look in the mirror, to see I had no food left.
