Backstory: During the war, Emerald was sent on a mission to search for the location of Ruby and Sapphire, because her future vision could pose a big threat if in the wrong hands. Along with her, were a Quartz and two Rubies. While looking for two, Emerald's group was ambushed by some Crystal Gems.(Who are now either corrupted or shattered) After the Quartz and Rubies were poofed trying to protect her, she was cornered on top of a small cliff. (She couldn't fight back at the time because she hadn't discovered her other abilities or her weapon yet.)Emerald then lost her balance and fell before they could catch her.

She got poofed after falling a couple of hundred feet and landed in a rose bush. When she reformed, she was slightly chipped and cracked, so she temperarily lost her vision. Rose saw her and offered to heal her. Being out of range of any homeworld gems and warp pads, and noticing Rose wasn't being hostile, she reluctanty agreed. After she was healed, Rose explained to her about what she was fighting for and the hidden potential Emerald had. After a while, She warmed up to Rose, Emerald then decided to join the Rebellion.
