Considering that AI can only mimic humans to a certain degree at this point in time, I think it would be quite unlikely for animal and machine to become normal friends.

An AI cannot even do anything intentionally. Love and friendship must necessarily be intentional. But perhaps, though the robot has no intention of loving the dog, the dog loves the robot anyways. I don't know if it is a happy or sad thing for a being to love something without knowing that the thing it loves has no will, and cannot love.
