Re// Well I find looking at pictures can really help, even close up pictures of lava, burning skies, ash falling, rocks and even the way the light from the lava will reflect on certain surfaces and the Wyvern/Creature in the picture. Also heat can distort/waver the air, might be a cool effect to play around with if you're feeling risky ;P

Adding onto Blood's comment, a good way to show the heat distorting would be to blur parts of the background. You can probably experiment with it and see what looks best to you.
