So the reason why the background is grey or blank is because Haze is a somewhat mischievous spirit. He likes to pull randomly selected opponents into his own little plain of existence to either taunt or battle contestants he thinks are worthy of testing his abilities or simply for his amusement, In this case koni was the victim. Whenever the opponent disappears to his plain, a signature black rose is left behind to show that he is the one that has taken them. He can exist in the physical world as a physical being but he can only do that for so long but he can exist as a spiritual or invisible form for as long as he wants in the physical world. I'm still developing a story/ background for him.
