Thanks for your comments, the area I live in isn't always wonderfully exciting to drive around but in the recent paintings I made of California and Nevada they are in the mountains and desert and the scenery is so sprawling and wonderful. I love the sensation of mountains everywhere you look.

Re: I think it was made circa 2009? It's not so old.
It is an adaptation of a novel series actually, but they haven't been translated into English.
I recommend it highly for anyone. Though a lot of my favourite animes are older too, this anime doesn't suffer from cancerous modern tropes (if that's why you avoid new anime). For that matter, you could probably watch it with your parents too (haha). That's not to say it's a kids anime either, but it treats its topics and characters seriously. It's a nice fantasy-adventure-coming of age story.

Oh also it's on Hulu. (it used to be on Netflix, but alas, they removed it.) If you don't have hulu then there's always kissanime.com.
