I think what's making the eyes look "bad" is they have too much detail, the fleshy corners wouldn't be so visible at this distance.
Have you tried making miis of your characters? It's a fun challenge to get them to look mostly right. It's annoying as f*** when your character has an odd hairstyle though. lol

Actually the first thing i did with my 3ds was to make mii characters of them all lmao, but yeah, they don't look exactly right
it was fun when i had tomodatchi to play with them (i dont have it anymore Big Regret)
