Nightmare Syndrome by Archive_of_Dreams
The Nightmare themselves are a curse, they are a living breathing form of dark magic that takes over a Dreamer body. The Dreamer that they take control of is the Nightmare first victim by eating the Dreamer heart reflection, a long with eating their physical heart.
Dreamer Fairfin is usually the second victim by either eating or corrupting. ( In rare cases a Fairfin can escape and live but they generally are tainted by Darkness)
All Dreamers have the curse of the Nightmare on them, but it is dormant, Dreamers do not know this nor do they know what it is this that triggers the Nightmare to awake and take over in them, other than exposure to a certain kind of dark magic and if a dark creature corrupts them. It is also unknown what keep the Nightmare curse dormant.
Almost all Dreamers will live out there life never having a symptom of becoming a Nightmare.
( In Skey Dreamers are starting to trun more with Soledormir return)
When the Nightmare first starts to stir it will start eating the Dreamer heart reflection, and replacing it with itself, and grows, as it's doing this it's copying the Dreamer memories and some emotions that they find useful.
Note: even though a Nightmare has the memories of the Dreamer they are two different individuals. They also don't have and understand emotions like love, compassion, remorse and so on...

Symptoms of nightmare syndrome.
For Pyro :
Burning in the chest.
Fever and Sweating.
For Frost:
Cold ache in the chest.
Unable to stay warm and shivering.
(For both varieties they symptoms will increase the more the Nightmare consumes them)
Both:
Pupils of the eyes with slit
Increase hunger.
Odd Mood swings
Lantern light color will start to get darker.
Past the point of no return:
increase anger, irritation and dark thoughts.
Irises will trun a different color in eyes( And enlarges in True Form ).
Ability to sense others fears.
craving for raw meat or Blood.
Blood is very dark color.
Cracks in the lantern and dark light Inside.
Just before the Nightmare take full control.
Shifts in personality.
Increase in physical abilities, (strength, speed Etc..)
Hair or fur turns darker to black.
Blood is black.
Enjoy the fear from others.
Desire to kill the ones that were close to them.
Breaks their Lantern is the last before they trun.
Depending on how the curse awakens these symptoms may be different from each individual, expecially on a focus corruption.

Nightmares population is usually at a plateau, if their numbers increase too much Alphas and Ancient will thin the Herd, killing off potential rivals threatening their hunting ground and the weakest ones.
If the Nightmares population drops too much, an instinct kick in the Ancients and higher Alphas to infect and corrupt Dreamers until there numbers Balance out again, why they do this is unknown.
Foce or naturally corrupted there has never been a Nightmare with a Frame/Dreamer body under the age of 18 and live, the young Dreamer body can't handle the change and both Nightmare and Dreamer die.

Ohhh, it's in /all/ of the Dreamers but is dormant? I didn't know that, and I've scoured around your tags quiiite a few times. (XD)
