On the wiki page for Ford, it said that his parents constantly told him that he had to become a doctor, but on SOS:TOT when Ford talks about why he chose his job, he said that he knew that being a doctor was his 'calling', and then he says: "It's a nice way to make the world go round as well, don't you think?"
So I believe it was half due to his parents, and half because of the fact that he actually enjoys being a doctor so he can help others.
