Jim was born with a very rare "defect", his red hair. In his culture, those with red hair are associated with their trickster god and often cause a lot of trouble. Jim sometimes played his part, being mischevious, but most of the time he is quite obedient and quiet, unless he's talking about the thing he loves most: Earth
The name of his species is Shii'f Ulu
Jim has two older brothers, Greyson (Griisan) and Dan (Breeadan, sometimes nicknamed Bread since Buck pronounced it wrong), and his father Bob (Ba'robb).
The markings on Jim's neck and torso rank him as a third son of royalty, as only royal Shii'f Ulu have this many "extravagant" markings. The white spots on his hair are the norm for young Shii'f Ulu, and often fade as they reach maturity (around 27 Earth years)

As a shapeshifter and an alien species, Jim's body (even when in human form, shown in the top right) still retains it's supernatural qualities. His bones are very flexible, so he can fit into spaces much smaller than humans his size can fit into.
His species can also shift into any creature they like without limits, but they must have a clear picture of their anatomical structure in their head, otherwise they will not change shape. Luckily, Jim has a very good memory, and can shapeshift into anything he has seen the entire body of.

Going back to being brought to Earth, Jim was dumped somewhere in America, which brought much unwanted attention. He was transported to Area 51, where he was forced to endure many tests, trials and experiments. He has a long scar down the centre of his chest/stomach where he was examined internally (not shown on ref). Eventually, he was deemed safe and was transported to the only place where strange creatures can live - the Sanctuary.

During his time in Area 51, he met two other off-planet visitors, companions Keith and Ethan. Their species is usually a small, white bipedal creature (think of the Apidose from Doctor Who), but with American/Alien technology they can shift into a human form. They were transported to the Sanctuary with him.
Jim, Keith and Ethan are only three of quite a few aliens and experiments that live and work in the Sanctuary.
