Well at the time when it came out RPGs weren't really popular with America. RPGs gained popularity when pokemon first came out. The mother series came out a few years before pokemon. Because it didn't do well in it's first years it was never released in America until later dates. Nintendo has given us two of the first games in the series, they have yet to release mother 3. (*cough* tho my bro found a translated version on steam *cough*)
The reason you probably don't know about it too much is because it's underated for the most part.

Anyone who's played the mother series will tell you that it's more than just a good game! If they don't, uh I'm sorry but that's like saying you hate bacon! Jk
In all seriousness though the game is very memorable. It's full of quirky characters, ridiculous humor it has some of the strangest monsters you'll ever see. Monsters like evil coffee cups, molecular structures thingus, piles of puke, cranky old ladies who want to wack you - yes I'm not making this up. The story in off itself is very unique, the world is weird and wacky, basically no one is ever serious really. Did I mention that it breaks the fourth wall? Yes, like several times.

One of the better RPGs in my opinion.

Re: I don't think you can get Earthbound and Earthbound beginnings on the pc. (Nintendo doesn't like to put their games on other consoles) You can get both Earthbound and Earthbound beginnings on the Nintendo e-shop for the wii U
They might put those games on the switch as well. Sadly since Mother 3 was never released here, you can only find an unofficial translated version on steam.

You don't need to play Earthbound Beginnings first, BUT definitely play Earthbound before Mother 3 because that's really important story wise. Earthbound Beginnings is only the prequel prior to what happened in Earthbound. (Tho it was made after Earthbound)
