They're already pretty interesting to me. You could try implementing different themes, different sorts of fruit, instruments, flora, sea life. You can base the character themselves off of these themes or just the background, or both, up to you really.
You may also try different forms of expressions. I like your nuetral ones, but who knows you might find energetic ones fun to draw too.
