The actual plot is a space cop using human skulls as wormholes to try to free her love from prison, and Naota happens to be the best vessel for it.
There's also the symbolism that makes it a coming of age story about puberty and stuff. After I looked up what it all meant (because it's almost required to enjoy it) it became hands-down my favorite anime.

I'm not against watching FMA, but I typically try to avoid animes that're over 35 episodes, and I dunno how long it is.

I looked it up. FMA is 51 episodes and a movie.

Counting OVAs, FMAB is 68 and a movie.

I'll probably have enough free time at some point to give it a shot, but I usually don't watch that type of anime. Though my tastes have shifted lately.
