My first experience with Mother was a Let's Play, and if you don't wanna pirate it like everyone else, my personal suggestion is the playthrough by Super Beard Bros.

I'm also in the camp where I love the first 2 Paper Mario games, but SPM is my favorite. Probably because it was the 3rd Mario game I ever played and was 8 at the time. In fact, in my opinion, if SPM had the same engine as TTYD, it'd be the best one. But that may be nostalgia.

It took Nintendo twenty-five years to give us Mother 1, and the English version of that was finished in I99O.
And I can respect that, I hated Sticker Star and didn't get Color Splash at all, but I guess my excuses are that SS was really bad, and CS looked too similar to it. I think you should give SPM a shot because unlike the later games, if you look at it for what it is and not what it isn't, it's really great.
