If you want a strong acid effect, erase most of (! but not all!) a spot then do the layer copying. For a less strong acid effect, simply do not erase with high eraser opacity.
Depending on how you want things to turn out, erase in a random way or in a pattern.
Tbh just mess around with it and try things: that's the best way to learn.
I can't remember the original artist I learned from, and it doesn't help that said artist left/deleted account a long time ago, but I still remember what I learned.
I find what helps me is using a large brush size, and setting the oppacity guage of the eraser below half. From there tap the screen at "random" points across the screen, like bubbles all over the place. Do be sure to over lap the bubbles multiple times for added effect. Areas where the eraser removed most/all color from the screen tend to have the most effect.
Copy the image back and forth between two layers 4-6 (sometimes more) times til optimal oppacity has been reached. Add and remove as many times as you like.
Be experimental. Some methods work differently in a way that the finished image will be completely different.
