I know apocalyptic themes are popular though. So long as there isn't too much science themes flying around, people will probably like it.
As for abilities, you can make restrictions like one power only or one element. Because if there are only real life creatures, then some will be incredibly unmatched - for example, a bear vs. an eagle is not gonna work well for the latter. Special abilities would even that out, and you can prevent OP players by setting restrictions and asking then to tone it down if they ever get out of hand.
Or, you could allow fantasy creatures, but none with magical powers. Why not you make an announcement that proposes the theme, setting, and character restrictions? Maybe ask for suggestions or input.
