What about creatures from the game series Monster Rancher? The Worm is one of my favorites, but Antlan and Zaan come to mind as well. It even has Dragons and Phoenixes! And lion/puppy creatures, and fairies with horns and butterfly wings, and eight foot tall rhinosceros beetles!

ALWAYS. But the newer games took away death and "retired" the monsters instead. But I wanted to BE there for my monsters, not have some stranger at their side... It really cheapened the games, in my opinion.
