His name is a seceret that is to dangerus to tell, so he goes by 'the doctor'.
When someone says the '7th' or '10th' doctor they mean the regen'.
Thats why it has lasted so long, not only the briliance of it but because when one actor gets tired or at the end of the story, then just regen the doctor and get a new actor.
