Oakfall despises his mother, due to her (Lilywind) running away to have her kits whilst living with twolegs, escaping the clan. Eventually a patrol rescues her from twolegs, but she denies wanting to go back to her clan, and that she doesn't want her kits to become warriors. Oakfall however, became angry to find out he was clan born all along and that his mother had lied. The father (Snaketooth) takes back his kits, and the mother was exiled from Lionclan for stealing kits.

Oakfall grew up with a strong hatred for cats born outside the warrior code due to his past, being teased by his littermates by the name 'bernard' which was the name given to him by his mother. He would try patrolling twoleg territory in hopes of seeing his mother again, but it was no good. Therefor he knew she had left the clan for good.

He stumbles across a kit that is in the nursery, smaller than the rest, but is a lot brighter than most. He eventually apprentices the kit, and mentors it to his best. Later on, he finds out the kit was actually a rogue, motherless and lost but brought to the clan in hopes for a future. From finding this out, he abandons the kit on the thunderpath, leaving it to die.
When the clan asks what happened, he says that his apprentice chased a squirrel onto the thunderpath, and a monster killed him.
