Accretion disks are a result of matter orbiting around the black hole at ultra high speeds. Then this causes immense friction. Which super heats them. Causing ellaborate fusing of elements. That happens quite often. The closer you get. The more friction. Then atomic collisions. For an example. A quazar is a massive black hole with an accretion disk. Now that the horizon is larger. The elements around it will ger so hot that the light emmited could be seen at a milky way long distance. Very bright and extremly hot. Make sure you where some very heat resistant sun block and a thick lead shield.
