the bulk of my know-how for shading came/comes from me observing how lightsources and shadows work. the other main thing is (i think ive mentioned it before, but ill mention it again anyway) purplekecleon's "How I See Color: A Tutorial" on deviantart. I love that thing an incredible amount, it really helped me loads when I found it in 2OI3.
when i shade i basically keep these things in mind: the shape of what im shading, where the lightsource is, how bright or faint that lightsource is, and the overall color palette of the thing im painting.
the texture of whatever youre shading is also something to keep in mind, since wet things and metals have high contrast/are shiny. :V
alsooo when im shading i usually have the opacity lowered.
you know when you press up in the dpad? i almost always have my opacity set to that. but i have it on that without pressing the dpad, so then i can press down on the dpad for max opacity and press up for even less. VERY i often use the dpad to change opacity mid stroke. (you can even see it in some of the playbacks) ive been doing that for like .... two years at the very least XP it's pure habit now and feels natural. i do it when im erasing stuff too.
