The colors are locations where the pains will spread. Joint Pain is coming up, they can control any area of the Carrier.
Sore Throat is the only one to have emotions while on duty because they don't usually effect a person's mood.
The Pains don't need to sleep, but if they want to they can. They also don't eat or drink, except Stomach Pain.
