because im a huge steven universe nerd, in the story powerful mages' bodies can be vessels for gods, temporarily ejecting their soul. however, they are only powerful enough to hold "base" or "delta" gods, so to be a vessel for beta or gamma gods, two mages with opposite or complimentary magic types have to fuse their bodies and eject both of their souls.
