Sometimes when the circus director punsihed Joshua or beated him out of fun he let him stay the night afterwards outside in the cold.
With only a old riped blanket to cover him a bit on.

Also as the director cutted his arm of he burned the part of it what was left so that the wound wont get infected because he still needed him alive.
