This thing is nor male or female. It reproduces like a bacteria but it needs to consume alot to make a copy of itself. It also has unique scales which provide it blend in capabilities. For ambushes and such.

(How much does it need to split?) It would take about the whole population of New York to satisfy its hunger and replicative properties.

This thing can and will eat that much. Overtime it will get noticed by the local law enforcement. But they can't stop it. Bullets will just stick in its' shell which does absolutely no damge to its' insides.
