Keahi's childhood was rough, having a family so toxic to one another made the child rebellious to a T and prone to being violent to anyone nearby since he does not know how to properly mediate his anger.
Going through his teenage years(13-16) Keahi hanged out a lot with the wrong crowd. To other people, they were a bad influence, the bad apple of scoiety, to Keahi, they were more tolerable than his family.

He also used to frequently hang around Team Skull during the gang's early stages. He admired Guzma a lot and liked to join in the fun(spray painting Team Skull logos all over Alola, vandalizing, interrupting island challengers during trials and rap battles in the middle of the street)

During in one of his usual anger tantrums after a fight with his family, Hala approached him and strictly disciplined the kid. As the Island Kahuna, Hala took it upon himself to teach Keahi the right way to control his anger and gave him his first Pokemon which will help soothe his anger.
Hala was one of the main people to mold what Keahi is like currently. But what Hala couldn't get out of Keahi was the man's habit to resort to violence. He owns a knuckle ring that was long time ago given to him by an old punk friend, He uses that to beat up abusive trainers and poachers. He never let's his Pokemon handle the job because he does not want them to become tainted like him by touching such a horrible person.
After emerging as victor in the fights(almost always because usually, someone stops him before it gets any worst) he forcefully takes the other's Pokemon and gives them the choice of leaving or staying their trainer.
