I've neglected mentioning it (/was/ holding off til I made a reference for von...eh) but von doesn't lug his scythe with him everywhere, instead he has a "storage spell" that he uses. He creates a little portal and pulls his scythe out of that portal when it's time to use it... then puts it back away when it is no longer needed.
