I would recommend Orson Scott Card's book on character developement. [he also did one on writing in general, I think. It's probably good, but I haven't read it]
I found the character one very helpful and it wasn't boring to read! [at least, to me :b]
I'm sure you could find tips online as well if books aren't really your thing.
Personally, I like @whatreference on Tumblr as well as @mydepository. [both are ref blogs for everything, including, but not limited to, writing]
