Choose a Card (story) by Draco-Felis
I sat on the windowsill, the window open, not making a sound as I enjoyed the chilly night air. The stars seemed to smile down at me from thousands of years away.
Something rustled in the bush at the edge of the garden, making me tear my eyes from the beautiful sky and slide carefully down from the window. I advanced toward the bush and halted as I heard a voice. A calm, almost expressionless voice so quiet I could barely hear it.

"Welcome all..."
"Welcome to the show."
I wasn't sure if I was more nervous or excited. I peered around the trees...
And saw a magnificant stage, filled with dramatic blue and purple lights and with a crowd swarming below it, talking in hushed whispers.
I had barely found a place to sit when the voice spoke again.
"Quiet down... and let us begin."
The curtains opened and revealed a yellow cat, dressed in a black cape and tophat. His gleaming green eyes scanned the group of people, then landed on me. "You..." he murmured. "Care to help me with something?"

To surprised to speak, I nodded and stepped onto the stage to join him.
He pulled six cards from apparently nowhere, three in each paw, and showed them to me. "Choose a card." He whispered. His voice sent shivers down my spine, but I took a card and flipped it over.
Three diamonds.
With no warning, there was a flash. Everything glittered like diamonds; the stage, the trees, the stars.
I stared, open-mouthed in awe, and the cat gave a small smile and there was another flash.
The stage disappeared. The crowd disappeared.
I was on my own again, standing in the silent street, the stars twinkling on like nothing ever happened.
