Prologue summary:
The lords of the countries gather together in Infinity Tower to discuss issues about brigands running around in Avia, when a child wanders in and eats their food that they prepared. Before anyone can figure out who he is or where he came, Gelvak, leader of a bandit group called the Bael Marauders, bursts into the tower. Another person named Micah follows behind and offers to make this easy by having the lords give up their loot, then leaving, but the Royals refuse. Upon hearing this, Gelvak summons the rest of his gang and a fight insues.

The Royals combat the bandits, but they do so as passively as possible by only disarming their foes. Once Gelvak notices that his gang is losing, he steps into the fray, but gets pinned down. Just as it seems the Royals are going to win, an armor-clad mercenary named Argon swoops in, getting himself caught in the process but also allowing Gelvak and his gang to escape. All that remains of the enemy team is Argon and Micah.

Argon quickly runs off with Micah, but Micah turns back and goes to apologize to the Royals for what happened. Argon follows from a distance. Once she gets back, she explains to the Royals that she is only with Gelvak because of blackmail, and never wanted any of this to happen; she then offers to join the Royals and help them defeat Gelvak, and they accept her. Hearing this, Argon questions his own choice of alliance, but heads off to catch up with the fleeing Marauders.

This time, however, passive strategies are abandoned as Micah takes an axe to the ribs, and the Royals realize that there will be no easy way out of this one. In the background, Argon shows up and asks Tybalt for directions on how to get back to the hideout. Tybalt points him in the direction, but then Argon advises him not to engage the Royals with his current force before he leaves or else he would lose. Just as Argon predicted, Tybalt was defeated and the Royals move on.

As the Royals are leaving, they meet a Raven Laguz by the name of Eltenir, who then joins them after taking a liking to Micah. After the Royals leave, Argon returns to the battlefield out of pity and uses the last of his supplies healing as many troops as he can. He tries to convince Tybalt that Gelvak should not be trusted, but Tybalt remains loyal to Gelvak. Afterwards, the two agree to travel together in order to have a greater chance at survival, then night begins to fall.

Chapter 2 summary:
Now at the Ventus Mountain range, Micah and Eltenir are slightly ahead of the group. They encounter Mortem, a father travelling the continent searching for his son's chickens, and Kero, a hungry Cat Laguz who's never seen a human before. They get into a tiff and Mortem causes a forest fire just as the rest of the group carches up. Meanwhile, Argon is at a village shopping for supplies for the squad, when he encounters Zona, the Prince of Atrus, who is also shopping for supplies. Recognizing him as one of the Royals, Argon tries to flee, but Zona uses magic to paralyze him. After some negotiating, Zona agrees to let Argon go, and the two head back to meet up with their groups.

The Royals encounter Infinity, a strange being with intent to kill, and are about to engage her, but Zona comes in and stops them. Infinity leaves and then it becomes nighttime. Argon gets a wyvern rider to help him deliver a note to Micah, but the rider turns on him when they get there as he belives that Argon is turning coats. The rider calls in backup, the Royals take notice, and another battle insues. This time, however, Zona goes berserk because of his dragon-blood, and the Royals end up having to fight their friend as well as the enemy.

During the battle, Acen, the Prince of Xalys, is badly wounded by the wyvern rider; but, before the rider can finish off Acen, Argon literally stabs the rider in the back. Afterwards, he leaves to get back to his squad, but tells Tybalt to go on ahead because he thinks he's been followed. After regaining his senses, Zona decides to leave the group and go back to Atrus, but quickly comes back when Argon shows up again. Argon gets caught, but manages to slip away when he spills the beans about Micah's fear of dragons. Afterwards, everyone goes to bed except Micah, who takes a walk, and Argon, who skips sleeping altogether.

While the Royals engage the hoodlums, they are assisted by Reuben, a myrmidon that was at the local armory, and Finni, a chef who was sent by Zona to assist the Royals after he left. Meanwhile, Tybalt's squad continues to march towards the hideout, but Argon has yet to be seen since last night; that is, until Devina, Tybalt's wyvern-riding daughter, flies around and finds him catching up on sleep in the woods.

The two Baels move along to catch up with the rest of the group, but Argon lags behind, struggling to pick a side in the war. Devina goes back to check on him, and the two end up socializing; however, in doing this, they fall way behind the rest of the group. Back with the Royals, their battles only seem to be going worse as they go on, as both Oriale, Queen of Avia, and Indigo, Prince of Valon and Commander of the Army, sustain major injuries; luckily, help arrives in the form of Nodimmyr, a skilled swordswoman.

Acen and Indigo team up on the commander and strike him down, ending the battle; however, Indigo and Oriale both collapse from their injuries and need urgent medical attention. The village they are at can't help them, so the Royals quickly move to a nearby village known for it's exemplary medics. Meanwhile, since Argon and Devina are so far behind, the two decide to fly back to a village that Argon passed earlier, which might even be the same village the Royals are headed to...

Chapter 4 summary:
Argon and Devina arrive at the village. While Devina takes a look around, Argon goes to find her an apple; unfortunately, he has to go into the forest and find it the hard way since there were no good apple vendors around. Argon ends up being gone for a long time, and Devina begins to wonder where he is. Just then, the Royals show up at the village and begin searching for the village hospital after sending the injured to rest at a local inn. After successfully finding the hosptial, the Royals gain several new allies, one of which was a Bael Marauder by the name of Cliff, who was hired to locate the Royals and report back.

Once the Royals get acquainted with their new friends, Soven, a cavalier that works for the Bael Marauders, shows up looking for Devina. Upon finding the Royals, he decides to engage them and the next battle insues. Devina offers to help Soven and flies into the air, looking for a target to engage. While Cliff and Katherine, a Valonian pegasus knight, destroy the enemy team, Rubio wanders onto the field and encounters his sister, Kahli; unfortunately, she ends up accidentally hurting him since she was on the enemy team. Hitoshi helps Micah fight Soven while Devina takes on Cliff. Both Marauders lose and the Royals win the day. While Soven and his gang retreat, Devina is too injured to move. Just when a soldier moves in to finish her, Argon emerges from the forest and strikes him down. He quickly grabs Devina, mounts her wyvern despite his inexperience, and flies off to safety. The Royals go back into the inn, where they find Indigo awake thanks to his dragon-blood speeding up the recovery process. Just then, Kahli bursts in, begging for soneone to help Rubio. Micah gives her a concoction, which she gives to Rubio.

Chapter 5 summary:
The Royals stop at a famous Avian town to take place in the Ruish Kav Tournament, the biggest event in all of Avia. During their visit, they meet people who you might not exactly describe as allies, including the infamous outlaw Yuudai, the mysterious and dangerous mage Pac, and the dancing duo Meadow and Fay. Several members of the Royal Party enter the tournament, including Rubio.
After some pre-tourny fighting, the combatants are paired up against each other and the matches begin!

Meanwhile, Argon arrives at the Bael base with an injured Devina. After leaving her in a safe place, he heads into the hideout to get a vulnerary for her. He gets one from Tybalt, but ends arousing his concern in the process, causing him to storm off to see his daughter. Argon manges to quickly heal up Devina just before Tybalt shows up, and, after a heart-felt family moment, the three head back in for breakfast.
Meanwhile, the tournament goes on; Yuudai beats Rubio by distracting him with spoons, Micah beats Katherine, Reuben easily beats the shy diviner Kotori, Vern, the Xalysian tactician, and Pac have a close match, but Vern ends up winning, and Brycen beats Cliff (although Brycen insisted it was a tie).

Next up was Hitoshi and Kahli; the battle rages on and it's not quite clear who will win yet. Meanwhile, the Royals who did not join the tournament decided that the best way to get to the capital is by boat, and an auction for one happens to be going on nearby.
Back with the Baels, Argon decides he needs to restock his sword and asks where he can find an armory. Tybalt tells him about a great one in the capital, and Argon sets off, not knowing that the Royals are headed to the same place.
