Leathal lost his back right leg and part of his tail from fire attack from his father who is an earth pony supporter.
Leathal's father helped in the surface take over and Leathal ended up in battle with him. The scar on his chest is where he was struck but his tail and leg caught flame and he lost them mostly.

Lethal can fully manipulate his own sound and has limited control of other ponies sound which is why his power level fluctuates.
