Between the late nineteenth and early twentieth century ( beginning of the Republic ) , emerged in northeastern Brazil, armed groups of men known as bandits . These groups appeared due mainly from poor social conditions of the northeastern region. The latifundia , which concentrated land and income in the hands of farmers, leaving the margins of society the majority of the population .

Entre o final do século XIX e começo do XX (início da República), surgiu, no nordeste brasileiro, grupos de homens armados conhecidos como cangaceiros. Estes grupos apareceram em função, principalmente, das péssimas condições sociais da região nordestina. O latifúndio, que concentrava terra e renda nas mãos dos fazendeiros, deixava as margens da sociedade a maioria da população.
