Working more on worldbuilding and the evolution of these guys. Long story short, all vertebrates in this world evolved from six-limbed "fish". The aletar and their related species lost these sixth limbs, though occasionally a mutation will arise that will form a few extra bones in their back (nothing drastic). Sphinxes' sixth limbs evolved into the wings you see today, as their ancestors were arboreal. Another weird thing is that Aletian "beaks" are actuall fused teeth that... #AletianUni

... floated away from the main skull structure, connected by muscle and cartilage. This is how they can flip up these beaks, and served them well in snuffling around in the sand for food before they had true thumbs. Now it's just used for angry displays akin to flipping someone off ahah. The ancestor Aletar also has a wet, naked patch of skin around the nostrils for enhanced smell, but modern Aletar lost their suberb sense of smell to make more room for higher-thinking capabilities.

Note that I'm in highschool and study evolution as a hobby so I'm just kinda making stuff up that seems to make sense, from what I know?? There's still probably things that couldn't work though...

Yeah, I agree that I worded that kind of weirdly! I realized that after I posted it and couldn't edit the comment... But yeah, I get what you mean c:

The coolest thing you can possibly do with a species is create its own skeletal structure B)
