When his apprentice didn't return, Kestrel took it out on himself. He should have trained her better. Should have been there with her to help her and protect her. Perhaps he shouldn't have resented her attitude so much, or maybe he would have been.

Truthfully, he had never felt confident in his abilities as a mentor. It was an immense responsibility, and now, his failure; something he may never forgive himself for.
