there's a lot of things you could do with coal
-use it for burning stuff down
-use it to knock someone/stuff out
-crush it then make it hot then throw it to people's eyes
-put it in water for the next person to drink
put it as seasoning on someone's food
-substitute for pepper when crushed
-can be used as dark fairy powder
-can be used as a fog escape (aka ninja escape)
-dye for clothes
-drawing
-art
-crafts
-science
-MANY MORE

Perhaps he just understamds the value of coal to a higher degree than the rest of us...or since he's a "dark version" coal is as treasured as that one present that was at the top of your list.
