Munin, if you're still out there? I owe you a Roccoco. I have her 80% done but it's been a bit of a struggle. Hang in there bro. I didn't forget about you.
I just saw this movie last night. I've got to say it's a great movie but, it's not original. If you've seen Ferngully: The Last Rainforest, you've seen this movie. Check it out from the video store and you'll understand what I mean. @Arrjay: Your art is the freakin' bomb! I want to get this level of realism with this program. I'm working on some art now that will be posted in maybe a week. I need practice. :)
@Kub: She's voiced by Zoe Saldana of Star Trek fame. She stars as "Uhura." In my opinion Neytiri favors her. (The most recent Star Trek movie and its seguel coming out in 2011.)
@Kub: I think you should see this movie right away. It's a great film with some really cool character designs and layouts. And yeah. On second thought, I do agree she does kinda look like Jessica Alba.
Arrjay I love your work.
Your skill with this program is off the charts.
If you don't mind could tell me how you work with Colors, just some tips like how do you prepare your self for each drawing. Just share anything that you think to be helpful.
Daniel,
I break it down into 4 steps.
1-line drawing. This has to be solid and is the framework for what follows.
2-Value structure. If the values don't work, the colors won't work.
3-Color. All I do is replace the value with color making sure I don't throw the value off. This important and what could turn it mushy.
4-Details. If the cake is baked right then I add the icing. And the little white hi-lites I like to call "Pigeon Sh*t"
And Daniel, of course once to learn the rules, you are allowed to break the rules so I do paint like the aforementioned 99% of the time. It's an old masters technique. Maxfield Parrish did as well. Black and white first and then color.
When I paint a high key subject I tend to block the value stage in with color. This is much trickier, so be careful.I find I can be the colors cleaner.
Don't be discouraged. I have been an artist for 25 years so I know a few tricks. Copying other artists work is a great way to step inside their heads.
I hope this helps.
That will be $500.00 please.
@madanchi: it's basically a lot of patience as you can see by the pictures of Arrjay, alan pina and consorts or even that one robin pic of mine. It doesn't require creativity or even knowledge of lighting, colour or shape... just my two cents
@dren1: Following my theses: obviously because of my lack of patience (and maybe experience in copying stuff... Arrjay works as an artist for 25 years. in the film industry, is that correct, Arrjay?) ;-P
@Zeitwolf : I didn't say your paintings arent nice. I looked through your profile. They are nice. They would be better if you understood the nature of light as well as Arrjay does. Please don't take that as a slam. Your 3 previous comments about this painting seemed to be backhanded compliments that were aimed at be-little or mimumize Arrjay's outstanding work. I'm sure he wasn't hurt by your comments, I don't know why it bothered me. I should have limited my comments to positve thoughts. I vow to use more self control in the future. I second Arrjay's montra: Light is everything!
Just to make myself clear, I wasn't aiming at anyone's feelings or believs. I simply have got a problem that copies often tend to get more attention and awe than the artist's original work (if they even have original art). Many drawers seem not to have a problem with it. I do. I copy, too. Of course. As Arrjay statet, you can learn a lot by copying. But I want credit for my original ideas rather than for the copied stuff... Arrjay's image is a high-level copy of http://www.imdb.com/media/rm1265536512/tt0499549, particularly on the DS. But I find it ridiculous to salute to lighting effects, which are there in the image. I rather admire his ability to see these colours and values. It needs a lot of practice I think.
Thanks for the link! It's down right spooky looking at the two images side by side. I know I couldn't come close to making something as detailed as this image.
why is zeitwolf talking so much sh!t? This is marvelous. Copy or not he couldnt do this. He put up his attempt at an avatar painting and it sucked ass. Shut up and respect the work of someone who knows what their doing.
BTW. "copying" is what helps us mature as artists and as adults. Picasso didnt just decide one day to be one of the greatest artists that ever lived. He worked for it.
To everyone who's posted a comment about Zeitwolf's commments: She's entitled to her own opinions as well we are. All I ask is may we keep from swearing at each other? We don't know one another personally. Even if did it would not be right to use that kind of language in the first place. We're not here to slam one another but, to admire and learn from each other. I understand what Zeitwolf was saying when she said, "Zeitwolf on 2010-01-02 16:41:51
I keep wondering why copying a screenshot/photograph/painting is such a great thing to marvel at..." Being influenced by American comics, European comics, manga, and anime I too, believe that creating things from the imagination is a pretty high standard to attain but, I also know every artist must copy someone else's work to get better. (Not a back handed comment.) I fully intend on copying not the subject matter that Arrjay paints but, the how & the why of the step by step process of the paintings he creates. Believe it or not this instruction is better than the Gnomon Workshop DVDs. :)
Dont forget that this is a forum to show drawings made by an aplication for a Nintendo DS or an ipod or an iphone!!!... its just another game!!!... nobody want to be an "artist" or to be famous in here... am i right? its not a forum for "artist" is a forum for people who have 3 dollars to pay an aplication... people can draw the way they want... if they want to copy its ok and if they want to create its ok too... the only thing in here is to have funn!!!
@ Arrjay Thank you for sharing your technique.
The hardest thing I have trouble with when it comes to colors is scaling. Whenever I try to recreate someone elses work I always seem to make some part to big, or to small. Do you have any techniques for this?
Lots of life drawing classes will help you see the relationships better. One thing I force myself to do is to look at relationships outside of the subject. Don't say, this hand or foot or eye. Say, this curve, this angle, this distance.
There is a great book called "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" which explains this in depth.
Daniel, you have 5000 bad drawings in you. The more you draw, the sooner you will get rid of them. We all have to put in a lot of pencil mileage to get good.
@Arrjay: Does a digital one count? I've not used paper to draw on in quite sometime. I miss it really. @Ratcub: I draw more than anime. Some of my upcoming art will show that. Anime is one of my faves to draw; has been ever since I started drawing it. Check out my gallery. It's got more than anime or manga characters. I've got an M&M in there somewhere and a few portraits. @Arrjay again: I know what you mean I'm just trying to find the humor in this. You know? When you and I were growing up who would have thought we'd be drawing and painting on a hand held game system, a personal wearable phone, and a personal wearable record collection all while riding the a bus, train, plane or, an automobile. (Not driving it.) lol. Now, if Jens and the rest of R&D crew would hack one of those eBook reader thingies that would be some kinda cool. It already has a multi-touch sensitive screen. Imagine the possibilities. Hopefully, someone will come up with a Photoshop/Painter hybrid to use on one of them with some really cool features and that would be mostly what I want for next Christmas.
@Arrjay: I will take your advice and start drawing in an actual real drawing pad. I miss the tactile sensation of drawing with pencil on paper. Drawing on the fly while sitting in a crowded place observing people as they busy themselves during their day to day lives is quite fun.
CONGRATULATIONS ARRJAY!
You are now on the first page of 'top paintings'
and now far from the top!
I am sure I speak for everyone when I say 'KEEP EM COMIN!'
PP, nice to see you are still out there. I miss those nice pieces you were posting a while back.
I hope to see more from you.
soon!
Inque,
I think any medium is fine, as long as you are drawing, but it's always nice to draw a bit lager (sketchbook) without zooming in, and my hand really gets cramped from the way we have to hold the darn thing. It would be nice if they could design one for an artist that was a bit more ergo friendly.
@Arrjay: Check out this link. I think you'll enjoy reading it. http://news.cnet.com/8301-17938_105-10385975-1.html This will definitely come in handy when you want to paint on the fly when you're away from your computer. Hopefully, it will make it's way to America soon. :)
@boombox: yes, it does. but, it doesn't have touch sensitivity. Everything is controlled by sliders or so I've read. There are some threads in the Forum about it. Where exactly I'm not sure. If you get one let me know how Colors! works on it. i'm curious to know exactly from a real world experience. Europe's getting it before the US.
@Inque: ahhh good! shame about the sensitivity though :( i may or may not get it, i will deffinately be having a play of it when it's released in the shops to see how it is irl and let you know :D
@boombox: thx for agreeing to give me the info. what's 'irl'? (you know? this has got to be the longest comments area of any painting i've seen on this site thus far.)
(:7)) I sharpen the stylist so it's not so thick. I also hold it at the very back end so I can plainly see the progress. Thanks for the great compliments!
"but, it doesn't have touch sensitivity" (qouted by boombox) I have a dsi and use colors on it and it does have touch sensitivity,it does everything that it would on anything else, and o ya arrjay, your amazing, you're a colors god and your work is amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! keep them coming:) I will be posting my own work in a within the next 2 weeks
to everyone: if you think this painting looks good on this page you should make it into a desktop background for your computer like I did. you'll see how good of an artist Arrjay really is.
sorry but I agree with Zeitwolf on the copying issue. What is impressive about recreating...well, lets call it 'creative blockbuster property' without any added personal artistic vision whatsoever? This is more of a skill rather than art. Copies should be regarded as mere studies to arrive at a technical skilllevel in order to express yourself through your own visions eventually.
This is simply garnering tons of hits and stars because it's a motive from Avatar, a mainstream blockbuster.
kinda saddening.
And just for the record, your copying skills are very high-standard. But people on here don't seem to know what is actually really worth appreciating when it comes to 'art'.
Sorry but had to get involved, at the end of the day yes its a copy but to recreate a picture as good as this is feat in itself expecially using a DS, Arrjays work is amazing every picture he does has such great detail i dont know how anyone can criticize any of it in anyway. I dont think anyone on this site aspires to be Picasso or Da Vinci and whether its a copy or an original were here to have a little fun with art on a small but great little program and yes i do appreciate art but if your really that passionate about art then do your work on canvas and put it in some gallery to get noticed
A quote by Vincent Van Gogh:
"I don't invent the whole painting".
Live and learn to paint art anyway you wish, there is no boundary to what we can and can't create or recreate, much art has been recreated over the years in different formats not to impress a public eye but from sheer fascination and awe of the artist. Take Jeff Wall, he recreated Hokusai's 'Sudden Gust of Wind' with photography, Arrjay's doing the same, except with a simple digital painter on the DS. I respect it and welcome it all :D
my pictures are finally up,please view them arrjay and comment on them, tell me what you think and please give any suggestions or pointers, please and thank you:)
sesei345,
I always drew and painted since as long as I can remember. I can't tell how many fish and cars I painted when I was a kid.Thousands! I painted things that interested me and I see you do the same. Just keep painting. Don't stop. The strong artists are the ones that stuck with it. Just have fun and keep at it. "1% inspiration 99% perspiration."
thx, ya Ive been drawing since I can remember and painting, and yes I draw stuff that im interested in,I will be drawing a lot of manga then later ill change it up
I work on them off and on. I get bored with them and let them sit for a while but if I actually put a timer on it I'd say 5-6 hours. There are many here that I did over lunch but the highly finished ones take much longer. You literally have to move one pixel at a time. Oh yeah, I also have a bad spot on my screen that shoots pixels out in a diagonal line and I have to back in and touch those up.
The soldier with all the gear was very painful.
Wow lots of coments! I think this is really really good. It seems so hard and it looks like it took u years! xD Though surprised it took u that long becuase it is really good. I showed this to a friend and they thought it wasnt drawn! well anyways great job and congratz!
:]
Aubrey123, I beg to differ. Look at them back to back and you'll see what I mean. I've got both of them and I'll watch them both back to back soon and give you a scene by scene comparison. Have you registered in the Forum yet? If not, please do and I'll send you my findings. I don't want to do it here because, someone could possibly not have seen Avatar and I don't want to spoil any of it for them. :)

02 Jan, 2010, 4:18 pm
@Zeitwolf: I guess its the skill of repainting it with high quality to look extremely alike, its hard to repaint something to look exactly as it is

Daniel,
I break it down into 4 steps.

11 Jan, 2010, 3:01 am
Thanks Inque, I will check it out.
11 Jan, 2010, 5:19 am

12 Jan, 2010, 9:19 pm
@Inque: ahhh good! shame about the sensitivity though :( i may or may not get it, i will deffinately be having a play of it when it's released in the shops to see how it is irl and let you know :D
13 Jan, 2010, 10:10 am
@boombox: thx for agreeing to give me the info. what's 'irl'? (you know? this has got to be the longest comments area of any painting i've seen on this site thus far.)
13 Jan, 2010, 4:59 pm

@sesei345: Hmmm it DOES hey...maybe i should update :D
01 May, 2010, 12:10 am
to everyone: if you think this painting looks good on this page you should make it into a desktop background for your computer like I did. you'll see how good of an artist Arrjay really is.
02 May, 2010, 4:02 pm
sorry but I agree with Zeitwolf on the copying issue.
02 May, 2010, 7:27 pm
Amazing painting, even if it is copied from a reference. Keep up the good work! Please rate and comment my art too :)
03 May, 2010, 11:09 am
Sorry but had to get involved, at the end of the day yes its a copy but to recreate a picture as good as this is feat in itself expecially using a DS, Arrjays work is amazing every picture he does has such great detail i dont know how anyone can criticize any of it in anyway. I dont think anyone on this site aspires to be Picasso or Da Vinci and whether its a copy or an original were here to have a little fun with art on a small but great little program and yes i do appreciate art but if your really that passionate about art then do your work on canvas and put it in some gallery to get noticed
05 May, 2010, 5:19 pm
A quote by Vincent Van Gogh: "I don't invent the whole painting".
08 May, 2010, 2:13 am
my pictures are finally up,please view them arrjay and comment on them, tell me what you think and please give any suggestions or pointers, please and thank you:)

10 May, 2010, 8:58 pm
sesei345,
I always drew and painted since as long as I can remember. I can't tell how many fish and cars I painted when I was a kid.Thousands! I painted things that interested me and I see you do the same. Just keep painting. Don't stop. The strong artists are the ones that stuck with it. Just have fun and keep at it. "1% inspiration 99% perspiration."
11 May, 2010, 11:10 pm
thx, ya Ive been drawing since I can remember and painting, and yes I draw stuff that im interested in,I will be drawing a lot of manga then later ill change it up
12 May, 2010, 4:51 am
Amazing drawing, no kidding, I'm really stunned, but there's just one little thing I wanna know, how much time did this masterpiece take?
12 May, 2010, 8:08 pm
I work on them off and on. I get bored with them and let them sit for a while but if I actually put a timer on it I'd say 5-6 hours. There are many here that I did over lunch but the highly finished ones take much longer. You literally have to move one pixel at a time. Oh yeah, I also have a bad spot on my screen that shoots pixels out in a diagonal line and I have to back in and touch those up.
The soldier with all the gear was very painful.
