The mark on the back of Serene's neck symbolizes being exiled from her elf clan. Her family was exiled when her father decided to marry a human woman and when Serene was born the mark appeared on the back of her neck to symbolize her family's exile from the clan. Her younger brother also has the mark but its on his chest.
